Our Eyes and Our Vision

Eyes.
Windows
to the soul.
Tears. Prayer beads of
sorrow and gladness.
Pools and portals brimming
with emotion, reflections
of the heart’s innermost secrets.
Sources of vision identifying
who we are and guiding us through life’s maze.

Wounds

Wounds.
We hold
anger much
too close, wielding
it like a sharp knife.
We let it slice through us,
severing all that is good
from a heart wanting nothing but
to love.  We are left cold and empty.
Until we forgive ourselves, wounds fester.

Security Blanket

New
rhythm.

Say goodbye
to the routine
so comfortable,
like an old friend who knows
instinctively what I need.

A blanket of security
wrapped around me. Reluctant to change,
I pry my hands from the edge, letting it
fall slowly to the ground around my feet.
Feeling exposed I stumble to hide
my fears that this change will change me.

Unsure what the future brings,
I must look forward with
anticipation
good things will come.
Bye old friend.
Hello
change.

Untaming the Shrew

Wind
gusting,
repelling
with expertise
down streets and alleys,
sweeping up everything
in its wrath and wildly
scattering the tattered remains
with reckless abandon like a shrew
whose testy temper got the best of her.

Precious Opportunities

There
are times
when choices
overwhelm us.
We want clarity…
yet it is elusive.
Fear and doubt gnaw at our feet.
Stay the course, one day at a time.
Soon, moments of fleeting certainty
will shine beacons of possibilities.

Holy Time in the Wilderness

Dry.

Tired.

Wandering
lost and thirsty
in the wilderness.

The pain and suffering
experienced here is not
punishment but holy time for
preparation and meditation.

Ready, we emerge stronger and refreshed.

One Body

The
human
family.
Unique members
yet all part of One.
Differences serving
to provide depth and texture
to individuality.
Bonds of unity created by
listening to and loving the others.

Chihuly

Glass.
Beauty
spun into
fantastic shapes,
hushed awe falling
over the crowd standing
shoulder to shoulder.  Splendor
emanating from his mind’s eye,
brilliance inspired by the wonders found
in the magnificence of creation.

The Question

To
be or
not to be,
the question posed
life or death preferred?
Each day lived on the edge
of destiny, uncertain
of the vagaries of our fate
yet trusting there is a master plan.
The truth lies in the clouds of unknowing.

******************************************

“To be, or not to be” is the opening line in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet pondering the nature of human “being” and of life and death.

The Bread of Heaven

No
matter
how thin you
slice it, there will
always be two sides.
Humbled, we can see both,
less quick to judge others’ views.
We cannot stand on both sides at
the end of the day, but a greater
understanding opens a path to peace.

**************************************************************************************
The quote “No matter how thin you slice it, there will always be two sides” is attributed to Baruch Spinoza, a 17th century Jewish-Dutch philosopher considered to be one of the great rationalists of his time.
