This day
we remember
the lives of so many
whose tragic deaths define a date
forever etched in our hearts and our minds.
We honor these brave souls who died
by remembering and
not forgetting
this day.
Defeat
is exhausting,
the emotional toll
heavy and hard to overcome.
Having to admit defeat is humbling,
… to accept it is not failure.
Adversity breeds strength
from the seeds of
defeat.
The
cost of
doing the
right thing requires
us to look beyond
ourselves and make a choice.
To put our own needs aside
and to own up to our mistakes
is a most humbling experience,
a reminder that we are not perfect.
Why is waiting such a hard thing to do?
Filling up every waking moment
with tasks on the to-do list means
waiting feels like wasted time.
But waiting is a chance
to experience
the same thing in
a new way.
Wait for
it.
Things happen at times which bring me up short.
Panic or jumping to conclusions
results in high anxiety
and vulnerability
to making poor judgments.
I have learned to stop,
breathe in deeply,
calm myself,
and to
pray.
I
close my
eyes, thanking
God for the gifts
of gracious bounty.
Knowing I can enter
into God’s presence in prayer
and communion brings me great peace.
Not looking for answers but solace
opens up the pathway to redemption.
The truth
is elusive
for some people to grasp.
They cling tenaciously to their
own version of the story until they
can no longer distinguish
reality, losing
any link to
the truth.
In love
is being in sync
with another person.
It’s a most precious gift from God.
Enduring ups and downs much easier
by our sharing of the burdens
too heavy to carry
alone…it’s done
in love.

In an analogy to fruit, my friends
say I would be a ripe peach because
I am sweet yet bruise easily.
Is there a language of fruit?
Would people who become
better with age be
grapes, with fullness
transforming
into
wine?
In my garden, I will plant lavender
for serenity, grace, and calmness.
Lily of the valley reckons
the return of happiness.
The scent of rosemary
exudes remembrance.
Health and long life…
sage’s gift.

On vacation, I have been reading The Language of Flowers, a novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. As a result, I have been reading more about the history and romance of the meaning of flowers. I knew there was a reason they spoke to me.
People
varying in
shape, size, and description
drawn by the mystical gifts of
the sea.
Crowds flock
to its edges
in yearly pilgrimage
to bask in its infinity
with awe.
Come fall
its shores remain
faithful sentinels of
the secrets that will draw them back
next year.
