When
the leaves
of summer
fall off the trees,
sinewy trunks are
exposed, no longer cloaked
in invisibility,
beauty classically defined like
ingénues strolling the avenues
only to fade again when spring returns.

Pain
over
time has been
my companion.
Moving as I move,
strong, steady, determined
to be a part of my life.
Constantly present, I cannot
remember a moment without it.
We’ve made our peace and learned to get along.

I
see things
clearly, from
my point of view.
Yet there are others
with the same clarity
from opposite points of view.
We must seek a way to create
a vantage point where all sides can see
paths to peaceful reconciliation.

We
are knit
together
in a fabric
of humanity.
Though we are all stewards
of the earth, sky, and water,
we are primary caretakers
of our entire human family.
Grace can heal the rips that tear us apart.

To
become
one with God,
we need only
to enter into
prayer, quiet the mind.
It is a relationship
that asks for nothing in return.
Hear God’s word, listen for the Spirit,
and open the heart to conversation.

One
discerns
and ponders
the signs of the
Holy Spirit, those
gentle nudges that bring
a great sense of joy and peace.
The convergence of ideas
or the flow of unstoppable tears
are sure signs that the Spirit is at work.

I
cherish
in my heart
rich blessings of
the Holy Spirit
that inspire gratitude.
Great gifts are bestowed on me
by the love of my family.
It is not how many things we have
but this deep love that is our bottom line.

To be wholly present challenges me.
Being in two places divides my
senses, dulls my ability
to fully appreciate
either experience,
yet I continue
to straddle them,
unable
to just
be.

The
city
is gritty.
It is hard to
find a street corner
without someone holding
a sign asking for money.
I cannot look them in the eyes
fearing they may see through to my soul.
I wish I could give not money, but hope.

We
can sow
many things…
seeds of regret,
discontent or doubt,
wild oats during our youth
growing worries and concerns.
If we indeed reap what we sow,
we are headed for more troubling times.
In Christ, there is grace for those who seek it.
